The Spire

Winner of the West Fraser Powers of Ten competition 2025.

This proposal uses scale and perspective to recreate the lost spire of Malmesbury Abbey in Wiltshire.

A 1:10 scale model of the missing spire and section of abbey is constructed on a plinth adjacent to the path approaching the abbey's remains. From a specific position on the path, the composition will magically align to recreate the whole abbey as it once was.

Although the model will appear to be thick and solid it is composed of a cantilevered lightweight steel primary frame supporting a secondary timber framework clad with SterlingOSB Zero, cut and layered to emulate the rich details that would have adorned the whole abbey.
