Printmaking
Julia Kashdan-Brown

I have been printmaking for over 15 years, starting with some lithography and mono silk screen printing. After enrolling in part-time printmaking courses at Bath College from 2009 onward, I continued to learn and experiment with various techniques in screen printing, including creating collographs and learning how to etch.

As an Architect practising for over 30 years, I have always drawn by hand, from early freehand concept sketches to hard line detail drawings. When designing, I work from a concept, developing this into the architectural, real, physical manifestation. In printmaking, I feel I often do the opposite - I like to start by making physical marks on cards or plates with blades and needles, working into the surface and adding layers. I am interested in distilling the 'representational' idea to an abstract concept.

I enjoy layering and overprinting and mixing techniques to make mostly monoprints and templates. Through my printmaking work, I explore spatial ideas, textures, layers, and colour.
